S.A.G.E. (Senior Adults for Greater Education) is seeking volunteers age 55 and older to support local schools during the 2026–2027 school year.
Every day, students benefit from the wisdom, encouragement, and life experiences that older adults bring to the classroom. A single hour each week can help a student gain confidence, inspire curiosity, and strengthen connections within our community.
Our volunteers serve in public, private, and non-traditional schools, assisting teachers and students in ways that range from academic support to sharing specialized skills and interests. Whether you are a retired teacher, engineer, healthcare professional, artist, gardener, businessperson, homemaker, or simply someone who enjoys helping young people succeed, there may be a place for you in a S.A.G.E. classroom.
Immediate Volunteer Opportunities
Several schools have already identified areas where volunteers are needed for the coming school year. Current opportunities include:
• Environmental Science
• Algebra I (three times per week, or as part of a volunteer team sharing responsibilities with the classroom teacher)
• Anatomy for Artists
• Introduction to Sculpture
• Gardening and Environmental Projects
• Silence Class (facilitating a quiet hour of reflection and mindfulness)
• Study Hall Support (knowledge of high school research methods and study skills is helpful)
• Sewing for Beginners
• Volunteer Choice — Have a unique skill, hobby, career experience, or special interest? We would love to explore ways to share it with students.
The Impact Goes Both Ways
Teachers consistently tell us that S.A.G.E. volunteers make a meaningful difference by providing additional support and attention to students. Volunteers help create stronger classrooms and richer learning experiences.
Yet many volunteers discover that they benefit just as much as the students.
Volunteering offers opportunities to remain active, engaged, and connected to the community. Many volunteers describe their time in schools as one of the most rewarding parts of their week. They enjoy forming relationships with students, witnessing growth firsthand, and knowing they are making a lasting contribution to the next generation.
One volunteer summed it up perfectly: "I thought I was there to help the students. What I didn't expect was how much joy and purpose they would bring to my life."

Most volunteer assignments require only a small weekly commitment, and opportunities are available to match a variety of schedules, interests, and experience levels.
